If you’re thinking about running for office, candidates must file a notarized Certificate of Announcement. The filing period opens Monday, March 2, 2026, and closes Friday, March 13, 2026.
Certificates of Announcement are available at Town Hall (104 North King Street) or can be downloaded here. If needed, Town Hall can notarize your signature.
Completed Certificates of Announcement may be returned in person to Town Hall or mailed to P.O. Box 248, Shepherdstown, WV 25443. Mailed forms must be postmarked no later than midnight, Friday, March 13, 2026.
Write-Ins
The deadline for write-in candidates to file is Tuesday, April 14, 2026. Individuals seeking to run as a write-in candidate must complete and submit the required write-in candidate form to Town Hall by close of business on Tuesday, April 14, 2026.
Write-in candidate forms and filing instructions are available through the Shepherdstown Town Clerk’s Office here. Candidates are encouraged to contact the Town Clerk in advance to confirm filing requirements and submission procedures.
Eligibility
To be eligible to file to run for any Town office, candidates must meet the eligibility requirements of a registered voter. This means you must be a U.S. citizen, at least 18 years old, a resident of Shepherdstown, and not under conviction of a felony or otherwise disqualified.
