New Art Bench Unveiling This Sunday, December 21, 1pm

Shepherdstown will unveil the first of several planned artistic benches as part of its revitalized Bench Initiative at a public gathering this Sunday, December 21, at 1pm. The event will take place under the new canopy of lights connected to the Market House in downtown Shepherdstown.

The unveiling of the first bench associated with the new initiative marks the next step in the Town’s focus on blending public art, functionality and community space. Designed as usable works of art, the new benches will add charm, creativity and a sense of play to the downtown streetscape while offering places to rest and gather.

Earlier this year, Town Hall reintroduced the Shepherdstown Bench Initiative as a way to celebrate local artists and enhance shared public spaces. The program builds on a long tradition of public art in Shepherdstown, including the wonderfully successful art-bench effort sponsored by Shepherdstown Shares: A Response to Crisis that helped bring smiles to our town during the COVID pandemic.

The new initiative will present benches that reflect the town’s history, values and creative spirit. Additional benches are planned for future installation as locations are identified in coordination with the Public Works Committee.

Two new benches have been in progress during the fall and early winter, with local artists painting them in a studio space rented by the Town. Each bench has been developed with the idea that art should be accessible, interactive and woven into everyday life.

The bench being unveiled on December 21, created by local artist Danielle Corsetto, is the first of these new additions.

Said Mayor James Gatz, "I am just thrilled with the new work Danielle has created for us. Just wait until you see it – it’ll warm your heart and bring a smile to your face." Gatz indicated that the benches are more than seating; they’re functional pieces of public art that bring people together, support local artists and add to the character of downtown. "The Bench Initiative reflects what Shepherdstown does best – combining creativity, community and thoughtful use of public space.”

The Town will provide hot chocolate and treats during Sunday’s unveiling, and encourages residents and visitors alike to stop by, see the new bench and enjoy time downtown. The event also  will support local businesses with participants encouraged to shop, dine and explore Shepherdstown while in town.

The Bench Initiative will continue to roll out over time across different locations as part of the Town’s broader efforts to enhance walkability, public spaces and the overall downtown experience.
