Few towns of Shepherdstown's size have played such an outsized role in American history. In 1775, local volunteers launched the legendary “Beeline March” from just south of town, racing 600 miles in 24 days to join the fight for American independence. A decade later, Shepherdstown witnessed James Rumsey’s groundbreaking steamboat trial. And following the Battle of Antietam, the bloodiest in American history, its buildings provided shelter and care to thousands of wounded.

Today, Shepherdstown’s National Historic District remains beautifully preserved, with 18th- and 19th-century buildings now home to thriving shops, nationally recognized restaurants, popular festivals, art galleries, and Shepherd University.
