Shepherdstown Ranks Among USA TODAY 10BEST “Historic Small Towns”

— National acclaim highlights Shepherdstown as one of America’s most charming and culturally rich small towns.

Shepherdstown has been named a Top 10 winner in the 2026 USA TODAY 10BEST Readers’ Choice Award for Best Historic Small Town, placing the community among the nation’s most celebrated historic destinations. Selected by a panel of subject matter experts and USA TODAY 10BEST editors and then voted on by the public, this recognition reflects the town’s enduring appeal and vibrant character.

Located just 90 minutes from Washington, D.C., and Baltimore, Shepherdstown has long been a favorite destination for visitors seeking history, culture, and small-town charm within easy reach of major metropolitan areas.

“We are honored by this recognition,” said Mayor James Gatz. “This distinction reflects not only our rich history, but also the vibrant, engaged community that continues to bring this town to life every day.”

Few towns of Shepherdstown's size have played such an outsized role in American history. In 1775, local volunteers launched the legendary “Beeline March” from just south of town, racing 600 miles in 24 days to join the fight for American independence. A decade later, Shepherdstown witnessed James Rumsey’s groundbreaking steamboat trial. And following the Battle of Antietam, the bloodiest in American history, its buildings provided shelter and care to thousands of wounded.

Today, Shepherdstown’s National Historic District remains beautifully preserved, with 18th- and 19th-century buildings now home to thriving shops, nationally recognized restaurants, popular festivals, art galleries, and Shepherd University. Visitors enjoy walkable streets, award-winning dining, live music and theater, outdoor recreation along the Potomac River, and a year-round calendar of cultural events.

“Shepherdstown is a special place that honors history alongside contemporary living,” says Experience Shepherdstown Board President Shannon Thomas, adding that “it’s an old soul with a modern spirit.”

This recognition from USA TODAY 10BEST affirms Shepherdstown’s unique place in the American story and invites visitors from near and far to discover its history, arts, dining, and welcoming community.
