Volunteer Opportunities with the Town of Shepherdstown

The Town of Shepherdstown is seeking qualified individuals to serve on the Town Board of Appeals, Planning Commission, and Tree Commission as described below.

Serving on Town Commissions and Boards is an excellent opportunity to contribute to the future of Shepherdstown. Download and complete the application form for the positions of Planning Commission or Board of Appeals.

The current application due date is July 1, 2026, and applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis.

Board of Zoning Appeals – Reviews appeals of zoning decisions, considers variances and special exceptions, and interprets zoning regulations to ensure fair and consistent application of the Town’s zoning laws. Meetings are held on an as-needed basis but must meet at least once a quarter at Town Hall.

Planning Commission – Oversees matters related to Shepherdstown’s physical development including review and assessment of proposals for new structures and updates to existing ones and review of proposed large-scale developments. The Commission assists with long-range visioning for the development of the town. Meetings are held on the third Monday of each month at the Town Hall.

Tree Commission – Assists in developing and maintaining a healthy, diverse, and beautiful streetscape throughout the town. The Commission maintains an inventory of all trees on town property, actively monitoring their health and their care, as needed, and responds to concerns of residents whose property is affected by town trees and plantings. Meetings are held on the second Thursday of each month at 6pm at the Town Hall.
