Election 2026: Absentee Voting, Early In-Person, and Key Dates in May

*** Please note that the information provided below applies only to the June 2, 2026, Shepherdstown municipal election and does not apply to the May West Virginia primary election ***

As the June 2, 2026, Municipal Election approaches, the Town of Shepherdstown is sharing important information to help residents prepare to vote.

All eligible voters—including regular, overseas, and military voters—may request an absentee ballot in the mail by May 27, 2026.

Absentee ballots will be mailed to those who request one between April 17 and May 27. Completed ballots may be hand-delivered to Town Hall through June 1.

Mailed absentee ballots will be accepted:

  • By June 3 if received without a postmark 
  • By June 8 if postmarked on Election Day 

Again, the deadline to apply for an absentee ballot is May 27, 2026.

Key dates in May:

May 20–30: – Early In-Person Voting Period
 
 — To take place at Town Hall (104 North King St.): 

  • Early voting (during the week): May 20–May 30, 2026 (8am – 4:30pm)
  • Early voting (Saturdays): May 23 and May 30,2026 (9am – 5pm)

How to Register:


If you live within Shepherdstown town limits, you are eligible to register and vote in the 2026 municipal election. Registration is handled through Jefferson County Clerk (complete information can be found here—scroll down to the Frequently Asked Questions), and residents can register in several ways:
 

  • Online: Visit the West Virginia Voter Registration Portal to register or check your voter status.
  • By Mail: Download the West Virginia voter registration form, complete it, and mail it to the Jefferson County Clerk at P.O. Box 208, Charles Town, WV 25414.
  • In Person: Register directly at the Jefferson County Clerk’s Office at 100 E. Washington Street, Charles Town, WV 25414.
  • In Person during transactions at the West Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).
  • The last day to register to vote: Tuesday, May 12.
